Best Careers in 2010
94Assuming you’re looking to find a new career, there are two directions you might want to consider: computers and health care.
Why health care?
As baby boomers age, the health care system is facing greater demands, creating better career opportunities. Health care careers are varied, offering lots of options. Within this category, you’ll want to take a close look at fields that cater towards geriatrics.
A lot of careers in medical fields require a little more education than other positions. But it’s worth it when you look at the long-term benefits. There are also often possibilities for part-time employment, especially when considering in-home care and medical transcription.
Pharmacist: To become a pharmacist, you need a Pharm.D. degree which takes about four years of study after you finish college, officially. Unofficially, I have two friends that took their PCATS (the test which most pharmacy schools use to determine admissions) after their sophomore year of undergraduate study and did just fine. (There are positions, such as pharmacy technicians, which require less education.) Employment growth for pharmacist positions is expected to be higher than the average of all occupations past 2010.
Why computers?
Every few months, it seems like there is a brand new career path having to do with computers. Software engineering, website design, IT analysis, new media consultants – they are all lucrative career paths, and are all relatively new. In 2010, there will be jobs we are only dreaming of today.
The key to any computer-related profession is flexibility. You have to be able to cope with rapid changes, learn new technologies and often have a willingness to either travel or telecommute. Outsourcing is a major concern for people looking for technical support positions, etc. Flexibility can deal with these concerns: there is still a need for on-site technicians, and you can take the opportunity to travel to a new country to work there, if you choose. Computers also offer lots of opportunities for entrepreneurship.
Software engineer: Most companies want software engineers with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering, or practical experience. It’s also expected to be one of the fastest growing careers through 2014.
Just one last thing for you to think about: take a look at this list of the fastest growing occupations, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Almost all of these careers are in computers or healthcare.
- Computer software engineers, applications
- Computer support specialists

Why did you not include "Physicians" in your list?
Is this US specific?
If our economy keeps growing in Holland we'll probably have a lot of job opportunities in many different areas by 2010. Including health care and computers.
Why didn't you include Nursing?
what about business or international or language
I can tell you, as a 25 year member of IT, if you have a job that isolates you on a bad career path, you'd better jump...quickly. IT is no party. I've worked more 24 and even some 36 hour days than I care to admit. Many were "just had to be there" days, but... I had to be there...
Outsourcing has me befuddled. there is absolutely no way to know whether to stay or go. I know a guy that was offered a job at a local utility not long ago. Four power plants and several offices. The company got a new CEO and suddenly the whole thing has been outsourced to Oracle.
It's insane. Do something else first, IT second. The skills are valuable, but not enough to found a stable life on.
If physician isn't mentioned then Engineer shouldn't be either. It's not like you can reasonably bust out an engineering degree in two years. Especially the way Universities structure their courses and prerequisites, it almost requires you to go 5 years.
Hey great job with this hub, You gave a lot of good careers.
I hope you can read my hubs.
Well IT is my top pick. It is over 1 trillion dollar market place. Not sure why people ignore it.
I would suggest to take a look at free Oracle DBA and APPS DBA Training at
http://www.orabyte.com/eLearning2/index.php?target
There are 100's of free vidoes and 1000+ scripts in the DBA and APPS dba tool at
http://www.orabyte.com/eLearning2/index.php?target
I use this tool and is awesome. Makes my life easy. Once you become DBA and APPS DBA you will need to get organized. Oracle is my top PICK for next 4 years.
Hi, goo info - nursing is a wonderfaully rewarding field... as well nurses are in high demand in Canada. I say leave the colonies and go north.
Thursday good info. People need to realize that even with things the way they are there are opportunities. Thanks for the info.
I disagree with home health being the best job for 2010. My co-workers work alot of hours, no insurance, make 7.30 an hour and no overtime pay. This is not the kind of work you need unless you are willing to work around the clock and don't have a family to provide for.
This gave me hope about becoming a veterinary assistant!
Thanx
Not all pharmacy schools require the PCAT! There are actually 14 schools (8 of them are in california) that I know of that doesn't require taking the PCAT
Here's a list of schools that do require the pcat / don't require the pcat
http://pharmapplicants.com/schools_that_require_pc
forgot to post it in my earlier comment
no mention of cosmotology, esthetics, nail tech...what about the beauty industry?
there was no mention of cosmetology because the beauty industry is not expected to grow significantly before 2010.
I'm a pharmacy technician and its very hard to get a job. Even if u do get a job its even harder to get the hours. The pay is not that great for what you have to do and put up with. Customers are very disrespectful and vicious. I personally been a technician for 5 years and i don't recommend it. Your job is constantly on the line. You can be fired on the spot for any little thing. It seems that they will drop you for breathing wrong.
Working in healthcare is not for anyone with thin skin. I worked in healthcare for sixteen years and everyone with whom I interacted from the physicians to pharmacists, x-ray technicians, nurses, patient care assistants, social workers, researchers, and regulatory compliance people work hard. Patients and family members are generally in a stressful situation and they have little self control. I worked as a Unit Secretary and in Regulatory Compliance and there is no position that is easy. You earn your money. I loved it and the people are the most caring of any profession but you will work for it!
i will not recommand any one computer engeneering i have seen for last 5 yr for my brother luck of job he is working grocery store as acashier while the university loan is waiting him provided that interest is going on top every month. you have to watch your steps.
this is really a wonderful hub....
very informative .... very nicely explained ....
keep the good work up .... god bless you .....
What about CPA?
Those are all nice jobs, but best of all is to follow your heart and do what you love. You wont have to work a day in your life!
Optometry was not mentioned. I am going back to school (I've been out of school for 4 years), I have a year left to complete my bachelors and then Optometry School. Will this career be thriving? I'm so confused, I really want to make the right decision. These times are just sooooo tough!
Hi there :)
im wondering if there's a future in cosmetic science?
coz ppl are beginning to get more beauty concious. so yeah pls comment. thanks!
I am a 16 year social work veteran who is struggling due to the current trends. Any suggestions related to career change?
hey can u please elucidate more on simulation engineering??
thanku!!!
Well if its health care that the go for 2010 don't do acupuncture as there is very little cash to be made and the health care politics stop integrating into other areas.
Results are fantastic paying the bills not so good.
thanks for information.....i am a B'Tech holder student...and i will finde a job but thanke for you to give me a full information.
I am a certified teacher and having trouble finding work. I currently work in a different field I am not interested in. I was thinking about going back to school for a 2nd masters in either Computer Information Science or a health care field; ex. social work. I am getting up there in age and not sure which road I would be able to benefit from. I don't mind returning to school if I will be able to get employment out of it. Please tell me which field you think would be better to switch to? Thank you!
Great article on Top Careers in 2010.
Any Speech language pathalogist there? plz let me know what your life is like in a school based environment...and what are latest IT job experience with ppl.
It looks as if the healthcare field will be promising for 2010..thank goodness! I have several friends that are going back to school for some sort of healthcare training and opting to complete course(s)online. I am looking into sonography/ultrasound training online at www.academyofultrasound.com
Is anyone else out there looking to retrain in another field?
There are jobs in health care but for some reason 80% of them are part-time jobs.
if you are going into nursing it's better be an RN then a RPN or LPN as it is called in some places. You will have a lot more options as to where you want your career to go. I think being an RN can take you almost anywhere.
Public health inspector is also a good career
Public health inspector is also a good career
These are all good jobs mentioned over here in this article. But I came to know about "Safety Engineering" known as "EHS: Environment and Health Safety", which is going to be the most demanding job in next few years, speacially in energy sector.
This is the Best Home Based start up business for 2010 i have seen by far...http://intelligymobile.webeden.co.uk/#/repair-course/4532531769
These are all very interesting bits of information, especially now that the economy is "ever changing." Anyway, I had posted earlier about Ultrasound / Sonography online program - for those of us who have to work during the day and care for family at night; then, focus on my career change at about 12:00 midnight! So, I am looking into this online sonography program at http://www.academyofultrasound.com
I hope some of you, who are like me, will find this helpful.
God Bless and good luck!
I still be plying music with the band lol
what about massage therapist?
Happy new year 2010....
Good luck all

HIIIIII THIS IS ROHINI GOIN TO COMPLETE MY BSC-IT COURSE IN JULY-2010 WOULD I GET ANY JOB
I hope that health care careers are on the rise I graduated in April for medical assistant but I havent been able to find something stable... So I hope this year is more promising for me. Im not sure if I should even stay in healthcare I kinda rather do cosmetology but that just doesn't seem as promising!! Im soo confused!!
Gud luck................
I am not sure what i want to be when i leave school, i am hoping that someone will tell me what a good job is to have. I would like to do somethinng that envolves sport, if u have any ideas of what i could be please leave a comment. Thank you
Medical Technician is a hard work to do and Doctors Assistant even more ...Doctors want you to do everything in the office and pay you $10/hr. and your lucky if they offer a full time. Most of them(Asian doctors)want you to work few hrs here and there. Before accepting a job as Dr's assistant check the scale of pay and don't work for $10/hr
your lowering the wage for the rest of us.
Does this mean that careers in busseines field are not booming.i think they are most booming in 2010
Forget about business careers like Finance, Management, Accounting, and marketing. There are simply no jobs right now and the industry is laced with so much politics and back stabbings. The corporate world is not even for every one.
I've always believed IT was a safe route to go, as computer technology is a critical component of all business. BUT, with this economy and OUTSOURCING proving that IT is generally the first to go, I'm totally skeptical of this as a safe and wise career choice if you are looking for stability. IT professionals in the USA are now having to compete for jobs with foreigners who will work for pennies and US companies no longer have any loyalty to American workers. Unless our government starts giving small and large business a reason to stay here and start hiring, plan on an IT careers in the future bringing in much less "bang for the buck" in the future and plan on working as a contract worker for an outsourcing IT consulting company!
try to think about robotics, nanotechnology and bioinformatics?
Good one Ms. Bram...
I totally agree with the top 5 careers in the list...
I suggest Database Administrator to the list...
What's your opinion about Human Resource Management's Future?
I've super stressed out, all my life I thought i'd be some huge makeup artist with a business like no one ever opened, kind of a wedding planning center...then i thought not enough funds will come out of that career. I'm now looking in to doing Human resources at BCIT in british columbia, my only concern is, will there be any luck in getting a job in that field? What's your opinion? because after reading this blog, i'm leaning towards the medical field to the demand.
Kerry,
Have you considered Health Education? You can work in many different arenas....
Good info .. i like the article but may not agree with everything. I have been in IT for about 10 yrs and am in Real Estate as backup. Living in Canada. Its been working for me i am happy but i agree that you always have to spend money on your education every year (10k per year) every year there is something new coming out. I just lost my job in Dec and now back to looking for another one again. But if you can live with looking for job every 3 to 6 months and don't mind doing contract work and upgrading your skills every 6 to 8 months. then IT is for you... it will keep you on your toes. i made $100+ last year but it look me 10yrs to get here. I have every certification under the sun you name it and i have it.
So in short, nothing is a Guarantee
If you are in college or soon to be going to college, remember to carefully consider what you will be doing with your degree. What will an Engish major do, teach? I think most business majors end up working in sales, oe heaven forbid, retail. Please make sure you come out with a degree that will get you into a specific field like nursing or engineering rather than just a field you were good at in high school unless you know exactly where it is going to take you.
What about GREEN collar jobs?
I am from pensylvania, i am a manager at cvs pharmacy but i want to move up to something better, i dont see my career at cvs, anybody have any suggestions.
Computer software engineers for the win!
I've been in beauty industry over 15 years. I've worked in Manhattan, where money "seems" to flow in many peoples eyes. However, I can say that after becoming a cosmetologist,NYS educator, master barber, certified colorist and senior educator for a top color company, I could not agree more with the fact that its a dying industry. The hours are long, the pay is not promised,no bennies,no breaks. And since the welfare system has overflowed now they offer cosmetology to welfare recipients because the reading and writing level to get into school is only 7th grade. Most salons now want chair rental and insurance is expensive when you are not promised to make it back. After 15yrs I have chosen to search for a new career. I have a few friends who have taken the pharmacy tech course, the cost of course is less than what you would spend in one week of chair rental and insurance and supplies in my current industry. And the course pays for itself in your first week's paycheck. Everyday I see a new listing for multiple local hospitals and facilities hiring for techs and the average pay is $16.50 per hour to start. I think the above statement as to not finding a job and getting fired easily has nothing to do with the pharmacy tech career but with the individual who thought it would be an easy out to making lots of money fast. I woudl like to know more about pharmacy schools in the NY area, its seems they are hard to find. I would like to eventually move to that level of success.
To the person who asked about massage therapy- being in my current industry so long, and having many friends who are not only massage therapist but as well as educator, I think I can say its about the same. Its a lot of stress on the body, long hours generally 8 hr days which in that line of work is hard. Also no bennies,no promise to make a money on a day to day basis. And with so many people taking massage therapy as a way to make cash on the side right now,the streets are filled with therapists and no work. Also, keep in mind with all the free post sites such as craigslist now, many people who are not licensed are offering "rubs" and "massage services", for less that the professional fees. While be licensed you learn proper techniques and learn how to NOT damage one's body/muscles/joints,most people today are just looking to save a dollar. Cosmetology/barber/massage therapy/are great for extra money but not as a career. Not anymore.
Can you please tell me about the scope in computer graphics and animation
I see a lot of people questioning jobs in pharmacy tech and social work computers etc...the way to go with those jobs are to get into the hospitals and schools and in local or state govt. I have several friends and myself in that line of work. We are doing great regardless of economy and our jobs are secure
what about like marketing and business related jobs?
I have to admit, honestly i love what i do! However it seems the HVAC world is falling apart, i'm in between jobs right now, and can't find a descent company to work for. I think there are too many hurdles to jump as it is, it's not the medical field but we have to keep up with all these rules, codes and regulations. It just seems like every time a career field is observed as a succesful one they throw more obsticles ahead of you, to the point where others are'nt interested, and not only that it makes people in my career field want to cut corners and not take pride in what they do. I think it's hard to determine what's what. I myself am ready to apply myself back to schooling only i am not sure which direction to go but which ever way it is i want to be honest and productive, and not end up at a stand still! All these careers say...oh! there is such a demand for this or that but is there really or is it a marketing skeem to get people who barely have the bank as it is to enroll!?
It seems as if nothing is safe these days ,tody youhave a job tom...you don't.Has anyone think about working for them selfs?look around closely and listen to the complaint of others and turn it into opportunities, think about that!
computer engineering is the best
what about the the admin of justice field???
I've gone to college before and completed 4 yrs. 6 months now and I have to say I'm still looking for a job, looks like I'm heading back to hardcore labor in the Union.
I'm making a killing as a Paramedic! I work overtime at will, PRN at hospitals, great benefits and plenty of downtime to rest. It's funny that I'm making more money than most of my friends with 4/6 years of college...
I don't completely agree with this list. I mean any business or legal related field is booming and hopping. And since 2009 was the huge recession (just recovering now in 2010) Accounting was the big recession-proof career, along with healthcare. Computers is a great career, but it is long hours just like healthcare. Business is a bit more relaxed (I currently work in mutual funds compliance) and it rocks! Great pay, 8:30 - 5pm work hours and no weekends or over time. Can't complain!
Do you think that going into cosmetology is a bad idea?
its now 2010 and there is a huge wait for healthcare in the u.s.a now, haha its becuz everyone ran for the job and now were all backedup on it.
computers is where its at. thwe future man. the future
;o
i made it into uit :D
Im been trying to find the job in IT industry for 1yr and 6month with 2 certificate still I can't find it.From website, friends, posting,etc..It seem that need lots of certificates to pass before you qualified..
Is radiologist in demand,,,jst like to know if the field is flooded or not...

rock star and professional athlete should always be up there....everything else takes a backseat haha
What about Massage Therapy?
Hotel sales and catering careers are great jobs that you can start entry level at 40-60 thousand and advance quickly. I oversaw 12 hotels and it only took 5 years. Work in nice surroundings, travel in some cases, great food, great salaries that can reach up to 200K. You don't need a college degree to advance to a General Manager position. Get started on-line at ahla.com or www.aprinda.com Or go to a junior college 6 month program.
You didnt mention clinical lab science(med tecnologist)
Hi everybody.
I want to bring everybody attention to the point that as a nurse I was trying to find the job recently and I would tell you it is hard to find job now. I can imagine what is going to happen with nursing in about 5 years when after this extensive advertisement by goverment of unlimited healthcare opportunities. I believe this is the way the goverment want to create huge pool of workforce and reduce wages for nurses. Looks like the best career in America these days - full time student of a lifetime.

If America will go socialistic more, nursing will be paid much less like was in Soviet Union. Looks like they do their work by destroying small businesses and middle companies with a results visible already - no jobs. No production nothing but service jobs and even these jobs become scattered because they probably want to equalize wages between countries to globalize countries.
Think simplistic... Trades, no one wants to work as a mechanic, hvac tech, computer repair, but this is where the money will be. If you have a skill, use it. don't let others keep you from earning a living, a good living and possibly your own business, if you have a head on your shoulders. do what someone else suggest, what you love, or wouldn't mind doing everyday. Come home with a smile on your face and a paycheck.. thats what matters in the end.
African IT is one of the most available job this knowadays so i wil rather do IT and get a living, some stuff can wait and by the way IT rocks
i really need help...
i need a job...
i am a telecoms engineer.
i am an indian barbar wants to work & settel in canada pls guide me.
haha,,NURSING today will never be in demand..
WHY U DIDNT INCLUDE ANY OF ENGINEERING FIELD ITS ALSO ONE OF THE BEST CAREER MAKING FIELD.......
top jobs without a degree
Try a hospitality job.
If your young, and just out of high school, start at the front desk and earn 8-14 and hour. After a few years you can obtain a managment position. The range is vast 35-100K or more. It depends on the size of the hotel and location. Many advance to General Manager jobs and earn 75 thousand to 150 thousand or more per year. It happens all of the time. My friend started as a secretary and now earns 150 thousand at a hotel in SF at Fishermans Wharf.
Another way to get started in hospitality is the sales and catering department. You can get entry level jobs at 40-60K plus bonus. These jobs also can lead to the Director of Sales or the General Manager job. I know of hundreds of people that got started this way. Get an inexpensive hotel sales certificate at ecornell.com or www.aprinda.com
Hospitality is a great career, it's a top job for 2010, and will be way into the future. I believe hospitality is the second or third largest employer in the world.
are psychologist in high demand? im s senior in high school im graduating in 2011 and i'am still undecited pls help?

so hard to find jobs as a dental hygienist.
what about green jobs?
Funny you mentioned Elementary and K teachers. Everyone I know is holding onto their jobs like crazy and there are no openings. Not to mention how stressful this job is. People think, hey, you get a summer off, but the truth is you make up for it throughout the year by not having a life. Pay is extremely low in pre-school areas.
What do you guys think of Occupational Therapy as a career. Bls mentions that its growth will be above average between now and 2018, but some fear the health care reform might halt its growth
nkmvdas that's my name. I am the leader of the humendoniezites, I am here to warn you of the course you have chosen. You need to know what to do when it arrives in 2011. Peace
What about Histotechnician or Histotechnologist? im currently finishing up my AA to be a histotechnician.
IT is extremely overrated. I know plenty of people that have bachelor degrees then get out and get certifications (which are harder than anything in college)but still cannot get a job. I have had an A+ and Net+ for over 2 years and a CCNA for over a year but still can't find a job. There are jobs in this industry if you got into it about 10 years ago and you will see jobs posted on jobsearch sites but there are tons of people applying for these jobs. I have talked to many people in HR who have told me if they have one job opening they get 50 good resumes. There might be a million seats open up in the next few years but there are about 10 million asses ready to fill them.
Can't recommend I.T.
The jobs you see on job boards are 90 percent from recruiting companies who just post the same jobs over and over again. Probably resume fishing.
you wouldnt hppen to know if becoming a plumber is a good career to go into.
okay i always been interested in the medical field. especially sonogram technician. i just got layed off of work. so im looking to go to school and pick up something promising. now alot have said that health care will be booming this year. do you think sonogram technicians would be a good field to get into are their jobs out there for this work? i need help
Re Dental Nurse.
Having spent a year in training in Australia which gave me one of the best dental nursing qualifications in the world having come top of the class and I am now top dental nurse in a medium sized practice I would advise any body thinking of this as a career not to bother.
you might as well stack shelve at the local supermarket get less hassle and similar pay!
what about medical billing>?
olooopopohjhoihghgtyuy
What about pyschology???
hi punk
f u salizar
crazy b******
you can go to hell
please get off the computer
make me
Hi Thursday,
Many thanks for the information u have provided.
But can you please elaborate on which technology is best in IT these days or whichone has highest job demands.
Thanks
Amit Choudhary.
Have a degree in business finance and I've been looking for jobs for two years now. Was thinking about going back to school for something in the medical field, then I found this awesome warehouse job making $19.2 per hour with potential making $24 per hour in two years. Blue collar is the way to go, less stress and don't have to put up with corporate craps.
IT is dying out and very competitive lately. As more people become computer savvy, fewer IT specialists will be needed. If you are super bright and love to solve challenging programming problems then this might be ok, but i would advise finding something else to do.
Are laboratory technicians and surgical techs in demand? Which job would be better?
I am a software engineer with Engineering Degree in Computers and a MS in Comp Science. I have been developing software for 16 years. Teaching in college close to 11 years part time here in US.
IT will be your worst nightmare, with out sourcing, Competeing with H1 and L1 visa holders from India.
If you don't enjoy doing it and have a natural aptitude for it don't do it.
Wait and see how our elected officials in congress, will pass laws to stop outsourceing, Imports and misuse of temp Visas(H1, L1) and then make a carrier move. I have 80% of my students in past 6 years not working in IT after getting a BS in Comp Science.
if any one want mba iam here
I agree with Sudir kumar,I have been a IT engineer for twenty years and it is getting to hard to find a job .After a while you tire of the constant training needed for very little return.I think the best new jobs will be in Green energy .
Everybody keeps saying that IT jobs are being outsourced. Well, which IT jobs aren't being outsourced? Companies still need people, so they all can't be sending off all of their employees to India/China. And I really don't think they're sending H1B's over here all the time. Does anyone have anything positive to say about IT? I am thinking of going into Computer Information Systems, and I don't want to make the biggest mistake of my life.
Don't worry. If you like IT, I mean really like it.
Do it. That is it.
It really depends on you. If you believe on yourself that you can accomplish very well the job while feeling happy at the end of the day, then why not?
Personnally I did internships in IT related field while studying. I used new technology like J2EE, Hibernate, Struts and more. I studied also some modules in Business and management.
But now, as a recent graduate I want to start a job that best suits my personality first, so I put away a career in pure IT. I prefer a career that combines IT with Business in the same time.
IT skills is a PLUS. It is not to be neglected, honestly.
But as a career in the future, to feel the whole success in your life -especially after year and year of studying-
I think motivation...the inner motivation is fundamental!!!
It is all about you.......
Hope that helps.
Liz, I am in the same situation. I'm planning on MS in Information Systems. All the bad reviews about IT scare me. I am an architect by profession and I have grieved enough for that choice. Can anyone out there throw some positive light? Is anticipating a career in IT a mistake now?
I have planning to change my career in IT. Can someone tell me what is the good field in IT to go with.
I am satwidner singh doing a MBA(FINANCE) from ICFAI .And i am plaining to come canada for further study, but i realy course which course i have choose. Can you tell me about which is course demanded in canada specially in accounting field.
Hospitality is always a strong employer. You can start at a hotel sales or catering manager at 40-60K an work up to 100O fairly fast. Hotels are everywhere and each hotel employs 1-10 or more sales and catering people to sell groups and convetnions.... It's easy to get an online certificate at ecornell.com or www.aprinda.com
I'm a nurse and my wife is a teacher. we are both continuing our education at a university, and we were wondering if there are any careers out there that we can work together in. we dont mind going a few extra years of school to have job security. we both really enjoy traveling and the outdoors. what advice do you have for me, and are there any "career test" that we can take to help guide us. thank you
Hey whydidnt u consider statisticians in your lists?
Every one here talks about IT is not the best field to get into. If you look at all the job boards online there are thousands of jobs posted. And yes alot of them are from agency's and they want like 1000 years of experience. I mean really how would someone entering this field ever get anywhere if companies don't hire fresh workers. I have two websites and I have used developers from overseas and let me tell you the work I get from them is not good quality and explaining things to them is another whole subject.
Maybe companies will realize someday soon that offshoring being that it's cheaper its not the best solution for a company. It's really the CEO's of major companies and politics, these top people are the brighest from somethings and very very very stupid for others. I guess my recommendations for anyone studying IT is build a new business with a partner with a business degree or build something of great interest to people that would buy a product or service.
What about heavy equipment operators.
Man reading all these comments seriously made me look at IT/Business in a whole new light.
Now il wondering if working for big companies like IBM, TD, Google offers better working conditions (salary, benefits, hours) since they all try to be like top employers. Cab anyone working for companies like these share their thoughts? Are they much more competiive in he hiring process?:l
Is Audiology a good career? I would really like to get into this, but I really need someone in this field to tell what it is like daily. It takes eight years to complete this degree, and I really don't want to waste that much time in school if it turns out the job isn't that great.

Is it true that most computer programmers get fired after 5 years and replaced with someone newer who knows the newest material?
I'm amazed at the negativity toward IT careers. Just a bit of background: I have worked for IBM, MCI, BellSouth, AT&T, etc., for a period of 14 years. I have consulted with probably 20 other companies in the IT sector. These jobs ARE NOT going away. Is there increased competition from foreign organizations/talent? Yes. BUT, if you as an IT professional add more value than someone in China or India then you will get the job.
Let me tell you a simple truism: Most U.S. IT managers realize that the cheap wage of an outsourced developer reflects only a portion of the cost. Many foreign developers are so difficult to deal with, for a variety of reasons, that the cost savings quickly disappear.
I have interviewed many foreign-born developers (e.g. Indian, Chinese, etc.) and a significant number of them can't play well with American engineers and customers. That is, because of the cultural and language issues, they don't make great team members.
So my message to those of you considering an IT career is to go for it. IT will be one of the fasting growing, recesssion proof and high-paying jobs in the next half-century. From the language/grammar of many individuals on this site complaining about the disappearing jobs and poor treatment of the IT worker I believe it probably is because of their inability to communicate well and understand the needs of the market and their employers. If you can communicate well and provide good technical solutions to problems you will always be able to find work.
Just keep up on the technology curve, play well with others, and try and understand the business problems and present solutions to those problems and you'll be a superstar. For those of you complaining about the ruthlessness of IT, my guess is that you are C players. IT has a lot of smart, motivated people and C players quickly get outsourced/fired.
If you're going into IT I would focus on .Net of Java with a great understanding of database concepts. Also you should be able to be productive on the UI end. Become an expert in html/css, php (or .net, servlets, ruby, etc.) or some scripting environment OR smartphone technologies like objective-c/cocoa, java ME.
The key is to pick a niche and specialize and become a PERCEIVED expert. Just make sure you can play well with others and communicate like a native.
No it's not true that developers get fired after 5 years. Think of it this way: you will learn an amazing amount of new concepts and technology in 5 years that will make you even MORE valuable. Why would a company want to invest 5 years in the training/experience of an individual, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and then start over again with a new, inexperienced person? A decent raise is a much cheaper and more efficient option. Here's the rule of thumb that I have always used: push yourself to become more valuable to an organization than your team-mates and you'll always have a great-paying job. Also you'll get the most interesting problems to solve as well which will further increase your value to your organization. Don't worry, just kick ass.
